Absentee Voting

  • What is Absentee Voting?

    Any registered voter may vote absentee beginning 35 days before an Election. You do not need a reason to vote absentee. You may vote in person at the Board of Elections Office or request an absentee ballot by mail.

  • How Do I Apply?

    A qualified Ohio voter does not have to state a reason to vote by an absentee ballot, although the ballot must be applied for in writing. If you are properly registered to vote, you must submit your written request to the board of elections.

  • Hospital Absentee Voting?

    You may complete an Absentee Voter Application Form. You may also write or go to the Board of Elections and request an absentee ballot, giving the following information:
    • Your name and voting residence
    • The election for which your are requesting a ballot.
    • Your party choice, if the election is a Primary, or that you want to vote on issues-only ballot. (Under Ohio Election law, the ballot you vote in a Primary Election determines your party affiliation).
    • The mailing address to which you want your ballot sent
    • Your date of birth
    • Ohio Election Law does not recognize a Power of Attorney. If the voter is unable to sign, the voter must make a mark and may be witnessed and signed by another person.

    Note:
    • If requesting a ballot by mail, your written request must be received at the Board of Elections by noon on the Saturday prior to the election for which you are requesting the ballot.
    •Please request an absentee ballot as early as possible and allow enough time if returning ballot by mail delivery to meet the return deadline.

    When you receive your ballot: If you return your ballot by mail, it must be postmarked* no later than the day before Election Day and received by your county board of elections no later than 10 days after the election. If you return your ballot in person or if a near relative delivers it to the board for you, it must delivered to your county board of elections no later than the close of polls on Election Day. If you are a voter outside of the United States on Election Day, the ballot envelope must be signed or postmarked before the close of polls and received by the board no later than 10 days after Election Day or 20 days after a presidential primary election.
    *Postmarked does not include a date marked by a postage evidence system such as a postage meter.

    Exception:
    Ballots mailed from out of the country will be counted if received by the Board of Elections up to 10 days following the election if post-marked by Election Day. (In the case of a Presidential Primary Election, ballots will be counted if received by the Board of Elections up to 20 days following the election if post-marked by Election Day).

  • Armed Service Voting?

    If you are serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces outside the state, you, your spouse and dependents may vote by an armed service absentee ballot if you otherwise meet the requirements for voting in Ohio. Your spouse and dependents may vote by an armed service absentee ballot only if they left Ohio to be with you. The voting residence of a service member is that place where you resided when you first entered the service, unless you later established a voting residence elsewhere in Ohio. Armed Service absentee voters do not need to be registered to vote. The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) provides a Federal Postcard Application (FPCA).
